Looking at the SMB side of things -- it was interesting to see the grouping of apps by gold, platinum, bronze.

Would you please when you have a moment comment further on this?? I think this would be a common scenario in many SMBs -- 2-4 hosts and N # of apps -- with either software backup or hardware backup if they have more $$$ -- how would you think about a 'few-host' scenario like this??

Any particular thoughts or ideas etc.??

Hi Tom.

Good question.

If I look at the big enterprises they might have an economy of scale to segment the various environments (i.e. production, pre-production, test, development etc etc) on different & independent clusters. This is because they might have so many VMs per each of the segment that creating a cluster (or more if needed) per each of the segment could be viable.

If I look at the small SMBs instead they might not have a similar economy of scale because they might have a need to have 2 or 3 QoS groups (ok they might not have the complexity of the big enterprises that have prod, pre-prod, almost-prod, a-little-before-prod along with test, development etc etc) but yet they might need to create a few of those segments. Obviously having to create dedicated and independent clusters per each of the segment would be crazy (based on my assumption in the article). This is where/when the resource pool concept that some of the virtualization vendors implement (i.e. VMware is the only one as far as I know) might be handy. Not only now you can consolidate dozens of servers on 2 or 3 physical boxes but you can further carve out many logical resource pools to segment the QoS that you might want to assign to your application.

Sure there might be security concerns but the assumption is that security concerns in the SMB space are more relaxed than those of the big boys.

I am not sure if this answers your question.
